ACS AI Innovations in Education Day Seminar: Friday 2 August 2024
The rapid ascent of generative AI is changing the way society create, solve problems, learn, and communicate. It affects every industry, including education where AI technology can have a transformational impact.
AI can enable personalised learning, free up time for educators to focus on what matters most and help address issues of equity and accessibility. It can also improve operational efficiency, bringing much-needed support to overburdened administrators and IT teams. Tapping into these advantages requires navigating both longstanding and new challenges in the educational field.
The importance of responsible AI, trust, and transparency are amplified when it comes to giving staff and students quality learning experiences and providing them with the skills they’ll need in a rapidly changing future. This conference is for school executives who are interested in a demonstration of four different innovations that could become a valuable resource for ACS member schools.
A hearty Morning Tea will be provided but no lunch – Maximum 20 attendees
Demo #1 (Paul Matthews)
Founded by two Christian educators, MyTeacherAide envisions a world where students, teachers, and school communities thrive. We work toward this by partnering with schools to provide user-friendly, cost-effective AI tools that help teachers save time, foster creativity, and have a big impact.
Paul Matthews AI Consulting: Paul Matthews is a trained teacher, TEDx speaker, AI in Ed consultant. He works with school communities to navigate the four pillars of AI in education: Philosophy, Principles, Practice, and Policy. He has worked with over a dozen Christian and Independent schools, and is able to provide schools with a suite of training, policy, and resources. His book, “A Time to Lead: How Christian schools can respond faithfully to Artificial Intelligence”, launches in August 2024.
Demo #2 Daniel Gibbon (Edexia) The Power of AI in Revolutionizing Educational Assessment
This presentation explores the potential of artificial intelligence in addressing the challenges faced by teachers and students in educational assessment. The presentation will delve into the concerns and challenges surrounding the implementation of AI in assessment and discuss strategies for mitigating them. Ultimately, we will explore the safest and most effective ways to integrate AI into assessment, enhancing not only consistency and accuracy but also providing both students and teachers with even more valuable feedback, potentially transforming the education system.
Demonstration #3 Nick Jensen (AI Simulated training scenarios by Evolve Simulations)
Alphacrucis University College (AC) is intending to launch a new Institute for Christianity, Public Policy and Technology. One of the first projects they are looking to pilot is a suite of Generative AI training simulations utilising highly interactive virtual avatars. These avatars are linked to a large-language model (currently Chat-GPT) and create a natural and engaging conversation with an AI avatar that can be easily and effectively designed and programmed for any scenario input – usable through Virtual Reality headsets or any web-linked tablet/laptop device.
The development partner is Evolve Simulations – a Canberra-based company who launched in February 2024. They are the first to market globally with this technology and run with 400% lower-latency than their closest overseas competitor. The training simulations have yet to be utilised in a school setting and Evolve and AC have jointly developed several demonstrations to engage classrooms, churches and the university space.
Nick Jensen is the Director of Government Relations at AC and the coordinator of the AI training simulation workshop. He was the founding director of the Lachlan Macquarie Institute, and also currently acts as the political liaison for the Australian Christian Higher Education Alliance (ACHEA). Nick holds a Research Masters in theology and politics, and is passionate about innovative forms of education that can cultivate current and future Christian leaders. He will lead us in a discussion around the potential of this important new educational tool and the role that the Christian school industry can play in the development of the technology. He will also provide a number of AI training simulations demonstrations designed for students, staff and the wider school community.
Demo #4 TREK AI (Presenter to be confirmed)
TrekAI is a trusted, AI-based tutor, intentionally built with a Christian Worldview that empowers teachers and improves student outcomes.
